Brandywine Falls Scenic Byway

After seven years of visiting Akron, my favorite fall drive is the Brandywine Falls Scenic Byway. Along this 7-mile section of OH-82, you’ll see farmland, woodlands, and waterfalls as you meander through Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

The landscape becomes a kaleidoscope of autumnal colors about the middle of October. Come witness the 65-foot cascade and waterfall at Brandywine Falls, which is framed by a kaleidoscope of fall foliage, by taking a stroll down the boardwalk walkway.

Visit Peninsula’s Winking Lizard Tavern once you’ve had your fill of the scenery. Enjoy a seasonal brew on their outside terrace while watching the leaves fall from the trees; it overlooks the national park. Willoughby Peanut Butter Cup Coffee Porter is my pick because it combines the luscious roasted aroma of autumn with chocolate and peanut butter.

Riverview Road

If you’re looking for a tranquil drive through the Akron metro parks, Riverview Road is the way to go. From Cascade Valley Metro Park to CVNP, this path follows the Cuyahoga River.

With their luscious autumn foliage, the shady oak trees that line the road cast a stunning reflection on the lake. The Riverview Picnic Area is a good place to pause for a quick trek along the Gorge Trail. Here you can enjoy breathtaking views of the river gorge and its gushing waterfalls.

Stop into Angel Falls Coffee in the Highland Square neighborhood to end your drive. Pumpkin spice lattes, apple cider, and baked muffins with an autumnal flavor are available at this inviting cafe, which features floor-to-ceiling windows that look out over a waterfall.

Hudson-Aurora Road

Easy access to fall beauty is just a 15-minute drive from downtown Akron along Hudson-Aurora Road. Look out for fruit stands peddling seasonal goods like apples, cider, and more as you wind your way through farms and orchards.

If you’re looking for an orchard that has been in the family for seven generations and has an annual fall festival, I highly recommend Mapleside Farms. Here you may enjoy a hayride among colorful maple trees, warm cider donuts, and apple picking. The cinnamon-sugary apple fritters are legendary, and you shouldn’t miss them even if they’re the size of your face.

According to beaconjournal, Make your way into downtown Hudson once you’ve stocked up on apples and snacks. Turkey apple paninis, butternut squash soup, and pumpkin whoopie pies are some of the fall offerings at Two Birds Bakery, where you can grab a bite to eat.

Hines Hill Road

Hines Hill Road offers breathtaking views of the Cuyahoga Valley. This winding road links the busy city of Hudson with rural areas and woods.

Just two miles south of Hudson is the Hines Hill Overlook, so be sure to stop there. From here on high, you can see the entire tree canopy in all its autumn glory.

A nearby family farm, Sassy Cow Creamery, uses cows raised on pasture to produce artisanal dairy products including ice cream and cheese. Pumpkin chai and caramel apple are two of their most irresistible fall tastes. Making your own ice cream and enjoying it while gazing out at the fall hills is the best.

Riverview Road

Riverview Road, which runs along the western edge of the Cuyahoga Valley, is another scenic route close to Akron. Between CVNP and the historic Hale Farm and Village site, the river continues the tree-lined course.

For a brief stroll to the remains of a mill, make a pit stop at the Jaite Paper Mill Trail. When the forest floor is covered in leaves in the fall, the trail takes on an even more brilliant appearance.

You should have lunch in the little town of Cuyahoga Falls afterward. Weekend specials at Riverfront Irish Pub & Restaurant include braised lamb shank, bread pudding with caramel sauce, and potato leek soup. Donuts prepared with apple cider and baked in-house are available by the dozen, along with other fall-flavored baked goods. You should definitely stop by to get some sweets before you return home.

If you want to avoid the crowds that Akron experiences during leaf peeping season, it’s best to schedule your picturesque drive during the week.
