I’ve been a travel writer for over seven years, so I’m always looking for new and interesting places to visit. I want to visit some of the world’s most remote airports in 2024. This will be a journey that will take me to many places around the world. These trips look like they will be the trips of a lifetime if you plan them well and are up for an adventure. I’ve been to more than 50 places on six continents, so I know how exciting it is to land in a new place. But arriving at an airport that’s far away makes it even more exciting. A lot of these airports are in places that are hard to get to from other places, like in the middle of rough terrain or in small, remote towns. Just getting there is an adventure in and of itself.

Mataveri Airport
On my list of things to do before I turn 30 in 2024 is to visit Mataveri Airport on Easter Island. Over 2,000 miles from the mainland of Chile, this small airport is the only way to get to one of the world’s most remote populated islands. The strange moai figures that stand out in front of the pavement make you feel like you’ve entered another world. The airport is very cute, with only one runway and a small terminal that only gets two planes a week.
Airport of Bar Yehuda
Bar Yehuda Airport in Antarctica is another famous, faraway airport that I want to see. From Punta Arenas, Chile, I’ll take a small plane across the dangerous Drake Passage for five hours to get to this point where the southernmost continent starts. When I land on the ice runway, I’ll be surrounded by beautiful mountains, glaciers, and icebergs. During Antarctica’s summer, from November to March, Bar Yehuda is open to brave tourists looking for an unforgettable experience.
Paro Airport
In Bhutan, a mountain country, there is one of the world’s most dangerous airport approaches. The airport in Paro is in a deep valley surrounded by huge Himalayan hills. To land here, pilots have to make a number of tight turns through the mountains. Only a few pilots are trained to do this. The views will be amazing as you go down this exciting path. Bhutan’s dramatic scenery and old Buddhist temples can be reached from the airport.
Airport in Svalbard
On the other end of the scale, landing at Svalbard Airport in the Norwegian Arctic is just as exciting. This airport is only 800 miles from the North Pole, making it one of the farthest north in the world. The runway is made on permanently frozen ground, and polar bears live in the icy wastelands nearby! You can only get to Svalbard by air or sea, which makes this faraway Arctic island a unique place to visit.
If you want to get away to an island, the airport on St. Helena Island looks like a peaceful paradise. This island is very far away in the South Atlantic. From South Africa, it takes 6 days to get there by boat. When the island’s first airport opened in 2016, it became much easier to visit this British Overseas Territory. The airport is on a windswept ocean plateau with stunning views. Beyond the airport, the island has history from the time of Napoleon, dramatic hills, and lots of different kinds of wildlife to see.
Airport in Yaping
One of the places I’m most looking forward to visiting is Yaping Airport, which is on the warm Chinese island of Hainan. This airport says it will be easy to land on the beaches of the South China Sea, which are ringed by lush rainforest. After leaving the terminal, I can’t wait to see the island’s beautiful beaches, minority towns, and old temples. Hainan is often called “China’s Hawaii” because it’s so warm and different from the busy mainland.
The airport in Coober Pedy
Coober Pedy Airport gives you a taste of the Australian Outback. This out of the way airstrip is ringed by South Australia’s harsh red desert. Most of the people who live in this town that mines opals live underground to get away from the extreme heat. It feels like you’ve landed in a post-apocalyptic wasteland because there are mine holes all over the empty land. Besides going to the airport, I’m excited to see how opals are dug underground and see the town’s strange sights.
Heliport of Ittoqqortoormiit
I want to go to Ittoqqortoormiit Heliport in Eastern Greenland because it is one of the most convenient remote airports. There is no real runway at this one-of-a-kind airport; instead, there is a helipad and a small terminal building. It is served by Air Greenland helicopters, which make getting to Iceland from the small village on the coast easy. If you land here, you can get to the world’s least-populated town, which is surrounded by beautiful bays, glaciers, and icebergs.
Gan Airport
If you want to get away to a remote island, Gan Airport in the Maldives is the place to go. This airport used to be a British Royal Air Force base. It is on the island of Gan in the southern Maldives. Today, it has planes from Male, making it easy for people to quickly get to this tropical island paradise. I can’t wait to swim with manta rays, walk along beautiful beaches, and stay in an overwater bungalow beyond the airport’s coral reef runway.
Alert Airport
Alert Airport in Canada is one of the world’s most remote airports and should be on any list of remote airports. This gravel strip is the world’s northernmost airport. It is only 500 miles from the North Pole. Its biggest customers are scientists who work at the nearby Alert research station. If you landed here, you could get to Ellesmere Island’s rough, icy wildness. Visitors are limited by strict permits, but I still hope to one day land at this polar island!
Even though I’ve written about travel before, I really want to go to some of the world’s most remote and difficult-to-reach places. These out of the way airports offer exciting trips to parts of the world that not many people get to see. It may take several flights, long road trips, or even sea trips to get to these places, but the prize is the chance to visit places that aren’t crowded with tourists.

I’ve been traveling for more than seven years, so I know how to handle the problems that will come up on these trips. I’m excited to cross these off my list of rural airports, as long as I plan carefully, respect the local cultures, and don’t hurt the environment. The memories will last a life time.
